According to an opinion poll commissioned by the Government via the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, 80% of students (at elementary level) would like to take up the opportunity to learn about music. Specifically, these students would relish the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument. This is a reality that sadly is seldom realised. The research that was conducted indicated that of these 80 percent, only 8 percent get to realize their dreams. And of these 8 percent, very few get to advance past the first year when beneficiaries are required to fork out money to support their musical habits.
It is to be noted that there are over 152 schools that provide for free tuition (in Year 1) across Britain. This state of affairs contrasts sharply with the prevailing situation in private schools where more than 50% of the enrolled students receive music tuition on a one to one basis.
This state of affairs (in public schools) is about to change thanks to a new music scholarship from the London’s mayor office. Incepted at the tail end of the previous year the Mayor of London Fund for Young Musicians is designed to offer a four year music scholarship for elementary school pupils. The first sets of beneficiaries are some 33 students from several different wards of the city. The fund is primarily targeted at students from underprivileged backgrounds who have displayed an aptitude in music. The fund is to cover a four year study course and thus addresses an issue that has always being a sore thumb when matters music studies are talked about – the transition rate from the introduction phase of music studies to the higher strata of music studies. The students to be selected for the course will be aged between 7 years to 11 years. The beneficiaries of this scheme will be required to attend Saturday lessons.
How music acts as medicine for the soul
To realize how effective music is as a medicine for the soul, you can watch a video about Henry. This is an aged man who is unresponsive to outside world and is given headphones to use in listening to the music of his choice. This elderly person living in a nursing home responds very well when he listens to his favorite music. According to Dr. Oliver Sacks who is a neurologist involved in the nursing home project where Henry lives, this senior is almost not alive. However, he gets a complete transformation each time his favorite music is played. On hearing the music, Henry starts singing and moving around and he become completely animated.
Emanuel Kant called music a quickening art at one point. Perhaps, you can understand this better by watching how music quickens Henry bringing him back to life. According to Dr. Sacks, effect of the music does not stop immediately when the music is stopped. Henry continues talking about how much he love music and which music is his favorite. He also tells other people what it makes him feel and why he loves it. He also sing his favorite music, I will be home during Christmas in which he recalls each word of its lyrics.
Watching this video can clearly show you the magical effects of music on the human psychology. In UK, there is a charity institution that deals in educating people on the power of music to transform those suffering from dementia, and autism among other mental illnesses. The aim of this foundation is to help children and those living in isolation conquer their loneliness. It offers them music therapy by playing music that has been chosen specifically for them. Several studies and one essay writers from PaperLeaf have also revealed that music has healing and calming effect on people with a wide range of mental illnesses.
High Note For Music Ed
Education is the key to success in every field. There are many talented youngsters looking for a place whether they can get the best music education and improve their skills. Dwight Heckelman who is the founder of the new college Groove U Music Industry College that will be offering education to many fans of music. It will be located in Colombia and this is a move that has worn Dwight recognition from many people before even starting the most prestigious and innovative college in the region. Those students who will join this school for music education will get the opportunity to choose and enjoy a 2-year curriculum in music business, production and live audio among many other courses.
Heckelman confirmed that Groove U will be great than any other music industry or broadcasting programs and it will be different and also offer unique aspects for the talented students. He also declined that they will offering all music industry studies and he also mention his advisory board that includes Jerry DePizzo, Matt Crumpton, Leon Bass, Andrew Dodson and John Daugherty. From the discussion with his panel, they were able to come up with what will be included in their music education programs. Many people have been wondering what kind of music education the college will be offering and whether it will expand in future. Dwight made it clear and said that the college will offer advanced and unique music ed and he refreshingly also said that he wants to be that person who will churn out quality graduates; but not a bunch of graduates with no experienced and the imperative education.
Additionally, he will be eager to achieve his mission by keeping the college with the best number of students who will also deliver. The students will be interviewed by Dwight himself and the advisory panel and the preferred students will have to engage fully in the music education and what goes on in the industry. The school will also ensure the students get music education without any complications and all the learn materials will be included in the tuition. They will get an Apple MacBook to theory books for better performance. Lastly, the students will always enjoy a yearly trip to the SXSW Festivals and also enjoy a lot of music workshops.
